CF449D29-3EAB-48C8-BB74-5A714740EC70.jpeg I love fresh fruit in the summer! Right now local strawberries and blueberries are peaking, other berries are close behind. Wild blackberries grow everywhere up here, maybe this is the year I'll collect a bunch and turn 'em into pies.
And peaches! The good peaches are just starting to appear! Peach season is the season of love!!

    Yeah buddy!
We're not quite at strawberries here, but they're coming. A local farm has their small stands up all over town getting ready. I can't wait.
    Marionberries on the way too.
We have a blackberry patch next to our house that when in full bloom, you can smell them all around.
For now, we've been eating watermelon almost everyday.

Oh man...so many memories of summers past come through smelling and eating fruit.

I really enjoy berries the most. I had some great organic raspberries the other day...they tasted like real berries.

The U Pick Them strawberry farms are just starting to open. We don’t see local peaches for another couple of months up here in the PNW but they are great.
    Watermelon too!

Seems like cherries have appeared earlier than usual. And maybe less expensive. Is there a glut of cherries?

Most store bought strawberries are garbage because the fruit is very fragile and doesn't travel well. After being handled multiple times and also bouncing around on one or more trucks, they tend to be mushy and bruised.

The new, genetically modified strawberries are bred to be much more durable and are in better condition when they hit the store shelves but they have a less than pleasing taste and texture.

Same thing with tomatoes. (Yes, tomatoes are fruits.)

It's hard to beat strawberries fresh from the garden or from the local farmers market. We started planting in our garden May 3rd because we were still getting several nights in a row of below freezing weather through May 1st.

    ...don't know.
But I had some early Rainier cherries and they were lacking in flavor (which is the first time I have experienced that).

I have also noticed some early flowering, but have chalked it up to foggy/overcast weather and a new moon a couple weeks ago. Anyone else notice this?

I got a bag of California-grown Rainier cherries yesterday for $5.99/lb. That's much lower than normal. The cherries are good but not outstanding.

    Right on.
We must be cherry snobs in our house since we only get Washington grown cherries.
There's a couple stands in town here that bring them from over the mountains. The local Whole Foods is good about stocking them too when in season.
There's been a few times we've made the drive ourselves (about a three hour drive one way) to get some fresh from the farm. It also helps there's an amazing tamale joint along the way that we'll load up at too.

Blackberries are the only berry I'm a fan of.

    And crunch berries.

I do love seasonal vegetables, as I love to cook. The mushroom pickins is slim. Not many morels around.

All year there is something fresh, and locally grown may not be as pretty as what you find in supermarkets, or last as long, but generally taste much better.

It's been a really weird year here so far weather-wise, but al least we have lots of figs on our backyard tree and in another few weeks they should be ready. Not sure how the u-pick places are going to handle things, especially now that CV-19 infections have started to hit some local fruit processing operations.

  19. Love summer and love fruit. Here in MI the berry season is delayed because of the cool spring weather. We Should have strawberries in a week or so. Cherries come in July. Lots of fruit is grown in MI in the fruit belt, but we won’t get apples and peaches until late summer. After eating fresh local berries, it’s hard to eat those things they sell in the off season.
