Guy locally is selling a Sunn 6x12 cabinet for a pretty cheap price. I wanted to get peoples opinions on them being used as bass cabinets. What is good about them, what besides weight and size is bad about them.

FYI, I would be using it with one of two heads. One is my Heritage SVT, the other is a Acoustic Control Corp 270 head. I know someone here has put this combination together at some point in time. Thanks.

OH, and this is the straight cabinet, not the one with the angled baffle.

Big, heavy, soft. In this case, you can have all three! ;)

But seriously, I am pretty certain that is a guitar cabinet. I have seen/heard them used that way, but haven't personally tried one for bass.

Is it an open backed cabinet? If so, it is not for bass.

Guitar cab by modern standards. Guitar 4x12s were bass cabs by old standards though.

The guys selling said it can be used for both. From his description it sounds like it would be good in the mids, but low end shy I am sure. And yeah big and heavy.

But it'll probably be moot anyway. After posting I found a Warwick WCA 611 locally for only a little more than the Sunn. So I'm going to check it out first. Thanks.

Great guitar cabs. Not so great for bass. Move on to the Warwick.

Depends upon what you expect from a cab, sound-wise.

I actually like the Sunn 6x12 cab for bass. But it's a heavy beast! IIRC, it's over 100 lbs.

Drivers would no doubt need re-coning or replacing too.

But it is a solid cab, with front loaded drivers. Infinite baffle, which provides a smooth low end roll-off.

Anyway, it's rare, but that won't really improve value for this beast.

As always, let your ears decide. It may be just the sound you are looking for!

No way would I ever mess with a guitar cab for bass at any price.
  11. I saw that here on CL too And wondered the same thing. Decent price too and pretty rare but a bit beat up judging by the pics. If the baffle is as stated above could work but the outlay in bass speakers would be prohibitive in my opinion. The weight even with Neo's would still be prohibitive to me but I'm not a kid anymore. I know it would look great under my 200S! If you really want a Sunn cab just call or EM Conrad Sundholme (SUNN) he's right here in town and he will build you a cab. You can find him on his guitar site Conrad amps and FB as well. He can tell you all about that cab too.
