Supertramp - "School"

Discussion in 'Recordings [BG]' started by volker, Apr 21, 2003.

  1. I've always been wondering how the slide in the bass line during the last verse of this song was done - I'm pretty sure they used a fretted bass, and the first vibrato units for basses weren't available before the early 80s, were they?
    So, anyone an idea?

PS: I hope you all had a good Easter!
    :)

I kinda dig their "old stuff". Crime of the Century, Quietest Moments, Crisis what Crisis.

Seemed like a decent Bass Player too.

  4. Looks like it, eh? @ Wrong Robot

My favorite Super Tramp song is "Good Bye Stranger." I also like "The Logical Song." Beyond that I don't think I could name right off hand anything they have done.

Yea, I liked the "Breakfast in America" Album.

There's a few good songs on there. I don't know who the bass player is but he did lay down some nice mellow grooves on some of those songs.

It's kinda obvious you know who they are.

d'oh....I was merely remarking on volkers use of the bold feature.

yes I know who supertramp are, I met their trumpet player(or guy that played trumpet for them for a while)
The music instructor at my school is friends with the band.

"Crime of the Century" is a great album.

  10. Thanks for all your posts, guys...too bad noone seems to have an answer to my actual question, though. :(

PS: Why should I not use the "bold" feature? After all it's for free! @ Wrong Robot

  11. I think he used a simple slide, you know, sliding your fretting hand down the neck. This is no big deal.

Supertramp is great! I love them.

  12. ...nah I don't think so as the slide goes from a down to e (= open string!).

  13. I'm gonna listen to the song on my lunch hour and try to figure out. I'll let you know what I find out. :) I still think it might be a slide.

  14. Dougie Thomson's line on the verse of "School" goes like this:

    -----------------------------------------------
    -----------------------------------------------
    -----------------------------------------------
    -5---x-5\---5---x-5\---5---x-5\---5---x-5\-

    x = ghost note
    \ = descending slide

You slide it all the way down to open E but you don't let it ring.

    :bassist:

  15. Thanks for interrupting your lunchbreak for this :) @ the ombudsman

  16. You're welcome! :D
