Sustain problem

I have an SX SPJ-62, strung BEAD with Slinky 5's. Obviously I had to file the nut to accomodate the thicker gauges.

I have pretty good sustain on all of the open strings, but when I fret the A string it has terrible sustain. The other strings hold up just fine when fretted.

The strings are about 2 weeks old with about an hour or two of use every day.

I backed off the poles (Dimarzio P/J pickups have individually adjustable poles) to see if they were dampening the string but this made no change except to make the pickup too far from the string.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks
