SVT 7 pro with a power amp?

I'm a little rack gear ignorant. I've only really had one great pre/power amp set up. (SVT II pre and QSC PLX)

But now I'm wanting a rack rig that has the capability to run 2, 4 ohm SVT 810 cabs. The obvious option is the SVT 8 pro. I'm not spending $2k on one. $1200 used....yes maybe, but they never come up.

So I am considering getting a second 7 pro(love the head soooo much) run them in the same rack and just split my signal into them and each powers its own cab. Plus for single cab applications I will always have a spare 7 pro with me just incase.

OR..... Getting the custom FJA bass pre built for me I have been wanting to do and run a power amp with two 4 ohm outs and problem solved.

ORRRRRR...... It just occurred to me....why could I not run a slave with my 7 pro? Just use the 7pro's pre and a poweramp so I can have two high wattage 4 ohm outs?
Would this not work? Would it be harmful to the 7 pro?

I know its not much more for a 2nd 7 pro than it is for a real nice light weight used power amp that will push 1000 watts + per side in stereo at 4 ohms. I'm just brainstorming right now.

    What would you guys do?

You could do that, sure. Would I? No. I like big bass rigs and I've played in a lot of loud bands, but I've never needed more than one 810. OTOH, if that's your thang, who am I to judge? But yeah, you could easily bypass the 7 Pro's power amp and run a big stereo power amp instead.

Sell the 7 pro buy a PF500, use the preamp out to drive the poweramp of your choice. Smaller, and you end up with a nifty practice amp. If you'd only be using the preamp why bother with the 7 pro.

  4. Run from the effects send on the first 7Pro to the effects return on the second 7Pro. That way the first 7Pro's preamp runs both units.

Because he has it already and the PF500 sounds a bit different?

Wouldn't preamp out to poweramp in be better? One volume knob to rule them all...

Selling the 7 pro is not an option. Even if I was only using the 7 pro's pre I would still have a back-up head in the 7 pro itself.
If I were to run the 7 pro with a power amp it would only be temporary until I either had the custom pre built or bought another pre. Then the 7 pro would still be the back-up head.

  8. I didn't look for a block diagram but that is essentially what the effects loop generally is (pre master volume). I'll look it up.

  9. Yes you are correct it appears the Pre-out and Poweramp-in are post master.

Yeah I know Jimmy. I don't "need" more than one either. I have played some pretty friggin big shows too and don't need a 2nd cab.

The two cab thing would just be with this new 3 pc band. Its more about the visual and the whole presentation stage wise than it is for any sonic value. But as long as its there I may as well plug it in. A 3 pc running a double full guitar stack and a double 810 stack is pretty impressive show wise IMHO. (if the band is good obviously)
Oh, and even if we only make $100 total for our set we would all happily pay two roadies $50 each and make no money to move all our gear. Hands off makes it way more appealing to run a big rig.

LOL! True. Well hey, we all sacrifice for the love of a good show. I could easily do my gigs with a DI and a 35w practice amp but I only do it occasionally ;)

I am firm believer in "go big or go home".

I couldn't do it with my current primary band just out of sheer stage room issues. We are a 6 pc. Full B3 with 2 leslie, 2 guitarists with half stacks and me.

I've been using my 7 Pro into one 8x10 for about six months now, and I've loved every minute of it. If I had the chance/money/space/energy to move it all, I'd get another 7 Pro and 8x10 in a heartbeat.

Sure, I don't need it. Sure, it would be overkill. Sure, it would be a lot of gear to move. Then why am I thinking it's such a good idea....

I did this once with two Markbass F1 heads into two 4ohm cabs. But trying to recall; I could still control volume individually to each cab from each head. Correct?

  16. Yes the master's would both be active and with MarkBass IIRC the VLE and VPF are after the effects return as well.

How about a Crown XLS 1000 as a slave power amp? It's 1100w into 4 ohms in bridged mono, so about the same as the 7 Pro's power section. Run one cab off the Pro and one off the Crown. Best of all the Crowns are $299 new, everywhere.
