i'm thinking of upgrading from a trace head to an ampeg. i'm hearing good things about the ampeg svt3pro. any opinions ? i've heard the odd reliability issue. fyi i like a punchy sound with good highs and a touch of overdrive occasionally. fender jazz, musicman sabre mostly. thanks
if you've read around the posts here, you already know what i have to say.. but IF you decide to go ampeg.. don't buy the svt3pro... get the svp pro, that's ampeg's preamp, the same preamp as the 3 pro but with more options and more tubes, and then get a decent poweramp... i use mackie.. carvin is a nice choice.. its cheaper and its better in the long run in case you want more power (bigger poweramp) or a different sound (different pre)
i used to have a SVT3 pro. i bought it used and it was damaged in the mosfet poweramp section. the technician replaced the mosfet section and everything was right. the head was quite good but it wasn't enough powerful for the music i play. another thing i didn't like was that some of the controls were for me useless, i never used the EQ section i used onle the volume of this section to have more output power, nor the tube gain. i sold it and i bought a SWR sm 400s that's with me now. i sincerely prefer the SWR 400. the head seems to be more powerful, i mean: now i can hear loud and clear what i play much better! that's my story, i suggest you to follow falsehoodbass 's suggestion with the ampeg preamp and a poweramp you'll save money and you'll have a lot more power! hope it helps
