I recently bought a Mesa 400+ amp, and though I havn't used it at extreme volumes, would replacing the tubes with more powerful ones be advisable? Playing it at fairly loud volumes, this amp did not get very warm at all. Also, what tubes should I replace the old ones with?

First of all, congrats on the new amp. I'm sure you'll love it. :)

Swapping out tubes is more for tone than power. It's not gonna get too much louder. I'm no expert, but I think you can only use 6L6s in the amp. Any other type of tube is gonna require some work, and probably isn't worth it.

I know there are a bunch of threads around here with the best tubes. I think JJs are pretty popular. I don't know, I still have stock ones in mine. One thing to keep in mind is that the amps don't have an adjustable bias control, as Mesa wants you to use their tubes. You could get one installed if you wanted. It's not major work, but you'd need to have a tech do it.
