Does anybody use a SWR Redhead for URB? The Redhead sounds great with my EB but I have yet to hear it with an URB. Any suggestions?

i dont use an swr red head but i use a studio 220 head with a trace elliot 210 cab and it sounds nice and grouwlly.(im trying to get a mingus type tone)also one of my main concerns was getting a clear sound that can cut through the drummer i've sucseeded.

I also use a Studio 220 thru a Goliath Jr. 2x10. Those 2x10 cabs produce enough bass but still have much clarity and volume if needed.

I experimented with the Redhead using my URB a few years ago and was unhappy with the sound. It seemed to emphasize the bass frequencies too much, even with tweaking. The transparent SWR sound doesn't translate well to the upright in my opinion. I think it is much better for electric bass. Some bassists get a good sound out of the smaller, cheaper SWR amps like the Bassic Black.

    BassGeek,
I had the same experience when I checked out the Redhead.

Lately I've been looking at a 2-10 cab for URB and EB, maybe a Bergantino(8ohms) or a Bag End(4ohms). I haven't decided how to power it though.

I have a GK800 that is great but I think I need a change. I could get a Clarus for URB and use my old Ampeg V4B for a more dirty sound. I'm also tempted to go for a seperate power amp/preamp setup, maybe a Carvin amp and an inexpensive preamp like the Yamaha PB1. I would prefer a Stewart World 1.2 and an Alembic or Kern preamp, but I'm on a budget.

    Any thoughts?

    Hello everyone,

This is my first time posting (newbie).

    Spanky B,

In regards to using a URB with a SWR Redhead, I have done so and the sound is, simply stated, mwah! The thing, I feel, the SWR amps do to any EB or URB is that it just amplifies the sound and tone of the instrument with altering them. Of course, you can add effect pedals and what not. Any time I play the URB through the Redhead, it sounds awesome.

Another way to go, depending on your budget and luck, is a Walter Woods amp with a bag end 2x10 cab. John Patitucci uses that setup when playing URB.

    Different strokes for different folks!

  7. I've been using an SWR 400s for URB for about a year with 1 or 2 aggie 112s. I also have a 2x10 Bagend, but haven't used it with the SWR. I'm really happy with the sound 90% of the time coming from a Realist and Fishman platinum pro.
