SWR SM500 (SM400S) as preamp?

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by snoopyjc, Jun 20, 2004.

  1. I was wondering if I could use my SWR SM400S (same as SM500) as a preamp by just not connecting the speakers (and using the XLR out). Will this damage the amp not to have a load on it?

  2. I don't think it will hurt the amp at all. I've used my 400s in the way that you described in both line and direct mode and it worked great.

Yep, should work fine. I do this all the time with my Studio 220.

Solid State power amps are not hurt at all by running them without speakers. Tube amps are the opposite. On a tube amp, the speaker jacks are normally shorted when you unplug the speakers. On a transistor amp, the speaker jacks are left open when you unplug the speakers. Without speakers attached a SS amp will draw very little current and run very cool.
