I was looking at putting a 4 ohm speaker into my SOB cab that has blown 8 ohm speaker. I was looking at eminence kappalite 3015. Would this work? Or is cab designed for 8 ohm speaker. Very newbie on this kinda stuff. TIA Dean
Why 4 ohms? If it's 'to get all the watts out of my amp', don't. Cabs aren't designed to work with a specific impedance, they are designed to work with the Thiele/Small specs.
yeah thats kinda it. I have 2 of them, would sell the 8 ohm one. this way I could use my svt with it at home and such. stupid idea?
No, it won't work, unless you disconnect the horn and crossover (which are also designed to be 8 ohms). Running a single 8 ohm SOB at home isn't going to hurt your SVT.
im new to the svt head world. Ive read so many places its bad to run at 8 ohms. heck I read so many conflicting things just on hooking up two 8 ohms speaker cabs. some say daisy chain is only way, others say you can run one cable from each output jack into each cab. Thanks obama hahaha
Yeah, don't sweat running the SVT 4 ohm tap to a single SOB. For starts, you won't be able to get it loud enough inside a room playing alone to hurt anything, before everything else starts rattling. You'll get reduced power, but that's not a concern here. The power tubes won't wear out any faster. I ran a single 8 ohm 15 on a lot of trio bar gigs when I was in my SVT honeymoon. You can get into trouble at doom levels of loud on a gig with that mismatch - that's the caution zone.
The difference in volume between a 4Ω and an 8Ω driver is hardly noticeable. Do yourself a favour and leave the cabinet as 8Ω. You’ll be then able to add another 8Ω box for more volume.
