i was wondering how these are. I know they get a lot of credit for being good quality for price, but how good quality are they?
i was thinking of getting this one:

Expect the pickups to be utter poopiee and the setup (and even fretwork) to be extremely poor.

I have an SX flying V copy. It wasn't decent until I did a lot of work with the intonation and truss rod, and put in a new bridge pickup.
  5. Hi Toshiro,
if you search under Essex of SX you will find numerous threads addressing this issue.

    Flying V guitar, not bass.

It fed back quite obnoxiously when I got it, and had terrible fret buzz, but with a bit of work, it's a fun guitar.

Sorry, I'm not a good photographer. But you get the idea.

Just remembered, I also put straplocks and new tuners on it.
  10. Dude it's a $100 bass, what do you REALLY expect?

Quality of SX guitars varies among models, I've had a few. Your answer doesn't sound like you've had an SX bass. You should try one, IMO.

Well, with some adjustment and aftermarket drop in replacement parts, my SX guitar was fine. Cheap, but fun and I play it quite a bit.

Never tried an SX bass. Might be a fun thing to tinker with.

yeah, but its made in china and well its cheaper... and well wow that made it sound crappier.
anyway, my point is i have heard a lot of good stuff about these basses (essex basses) and wanted to know if they are actually any good.
  14. DO A SEARCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:ninja:
  15. It would be really nice if the search function on this forum would include 1 and 2 letter words. It would certainly save a lot of frustration for people.

Yes, do search for the word Essex instead of SX. You will have many hours of reading enjoyment ahead of you. :)

    I'll say this...

I've been gigging one for the past four years.

If it was junk, I'd be playing my American Fenders instead.

Yes, they may need some fine tuning, and definitly a set up (but honestly, most basses need a set up to your personal preferance out of the box), but I doubt you'll find more bang for the buck than these basses. (required IMO)

There are plenty of poeple here on TB that play them in stock form, and a bunch more who use them as a mod platform.

The reactions to these threads are what make my day sometimes. I actually read the threads just for the responses.

SX is a great bass for the money, and yes, please explore the search function.

ALOT of people own these basses, myself included. :smug:

Please disregard this particular post as he is responding with information about a guitar, not a bass, and an older model at that.

    Start here - http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=524006.

    You won't regret it.
