Any opinions on Essex/SX fretless basses? Anybody play them or have played them? I know they're cheap, but do they sound decent? Necks straight? Fretboards smooth? Can you feel the fretlines? Are they complete crap?

I have an SX one. SPB-57. Neck straight. Sounds good. You can feel some of the fretlines , barely.

How is the hardware? Do the fretlines cause a change in the sound? I'm not expecting much from $140 - just a playable beginner fretless.

Hardware is fine. Stays in tune well. Knobs etc are fine. Fretlines dont change sound.

I've got one, it's cool. I really like the maple neck and fingerboard. The hardware works fine, and I like the tone of the pups. I'm going to add a preamp because I like active basses, but that's the only mod I have planned. :bassist:
