Mezmerize came out today, and I'm in the middle of my first listen right. I used to be a huge fan, but I haven't been very excited about the new album because I didn't like the direction the band was going from Cigaro and BYOB (I was expecting something more "mature" like the band said), and I'm not thrilled at seeing Daron taking over the band. Although I think he's a pretty talented guitarist and writer, I have a feeling SOAD depends on Serj (the singer) for lyrical content. I was also afraid that the new album would be more of the same stuff. Also, I haven't really been listening to much metal in the past year, so that's another factor. ;)

I'm still only on the 6th song, but it's been pretty good so far - better than I expected.

    Anyone else?

Picked it up this afternoon at lunch.....Listened to it about 3 times when I got back to work......One of the Best Metal albums to come out in a while!

I can't wait till Hypnotize comes out.......

I'm looking forward to seeing them when they tour the US.

  3. i love the new album...
i was never a huge SOAD fan, i liked the odd song now and then.

BYOB was instantly my favorite song when I heard it, the whole album I actually love.

I'd say the top songs IMO are BYOB, Cigaro, Radio/Video, and Violent Pornography

I'm picking it up in the next couple days, I've heard the leaked tracks though. Definitely radio/video, violent pornography, and revenga are some of the top tracks. I don't know, I like this one. It's different, somehow. Sparser.
  5. is it worth getting?, i was into thier first album back in 98 which at the time i thought was the coolest album ever (it was just one of those phases u go through when something new and exciting comes out), but after that got sick of them just pumping out the same stuff.

I saw them at the Big Day Out in New Zealand at the start of the year, and the guitarist was so drug fu_ked that he couldn't even play the songs properly. He fell over and dropped his guitar, but there was still guitar playing, after a while i realised that the guitar tech was playing the songs out the back. One of the most disgusting concerts ever, i feel sorry for the other memebers of that band.
  6. I'm listening to it right now and it's quite great in my opinion. I was a pretty big fan of System around when Toxicity came out and several of my friends were huge fans as well... Listened to them too much, covered too many of their songs... the songs "grew old", you could say. But just a few days ago I listened to them for the first time in several years and when I saw the new CD today I decided to pick it up. I like it... it's distinctly System of a Down, but it's pretty different from their first two offerings (I'm not very familiar with Steal This Album so I can't comment on it). It's a good listen, and it's pretty original. It seems as if they've progressed a lot in the last couple years.

i have the first cd and the second back when i was a nu-metal fan. I think their first album was pretty unique, some great songs. I dont really like them anymore but that new video looks pretty cool.
  8. IMO this is one of the best cds this year. there are some classics in waiting on the album. listen to it, its well worth it.
  9. This is the first SOAD album ive heard and I like it alot, very good stuff. I love the guitar sound , its got this dry moan quality to it. And the vocals are very cool , Mike Patton reminiscent.

System of a Down is one of those rare bands that somehow has never put out a bad song or a filler track. I was huge into the first album, and loved Toxicity when it came out too. Admittedly, Toxicity did get a little old after a while, but the new album is great. I couldn't even pick a favorite at this point; the album is so lean and mean they're all killer (although i could kinda do without the vocoder on Old School Hollywood).

I agree with somone's statement about not liking the fact that Daron is taking over the band though. According to an interview in Rolling Stone, Serj is ok with it, saying he respects that Daron had a vision for this album both musically and lyrically. I don't know if I believe him completely though. And I've heard differing accounts about the bass playing. One said that Daron played bass on nine tracks because Shavo's playing wasn't "tight enough." But Shavo claims most of the playing is his, and Daron just added a few bits one day in the studio. Hmm.

The finished product is badass anyway, but I just hope Daron doesn't end up with a strangehold... especially since I like Serj's vocals better.

I listened to most of the songs on this album and all I truly enjoyed was radio/video. I would say it is better than Steal This, but the bar should be a little higher than that piece of crap.

Their eponymous debut is still my favorite.

As a HUGE fan of Toxicity and Steal this....I am thrilled with this new CD I just picked up today (didn't know it was out yet!)

I'm not into heavy music much at all anymore, but SOAD is somehow terrific with their grooves, and unpredictability.

radio/video and pornography are my faves so far, but with exception of a couple odd tracks, it all rocks. Well worth the buy.

I will add that I feel a CD should be more than 36 minutes though. Even at that, I'd take a great 36 minute offering over 3 days of crap.
  14. i find it very ironic that they had to break it into 2 albums and this one is only 36 minites, I bought the album last week and at first listen I was a bit turned off by it, probly because i was expedcted something more like there older stuff but after listening to it I like it, I liked all there old albums yes even steal this album. I absolutely agree with disliking daron taking over the band, the only song that he doenst sing at all on the cd is cocaine makes..... i looked at the cd booklet thing with the lyrics and i found it quite disturbing that EVERY SONG ecept Question!(which I just happen to think is the best song on the cd) said the music was solely by Daron, and the lyrics are mostly all by serj AND daron, what happened to the music being by System of a Down? did Daron write the drum and bass lines? Just listening to the CD i wondered where the hell is shavo? the bass prety much just blends in with the guitar all the time, the albums system of a down and steal this album had songs with some dominant bass lines or solos, most so in there first album, in toxicty this wasnt very evident at all and neither is it with mezmorize, the only song i think has a decnt bass line is the verse in Question, and im not sure if that it is even a bass or just an overlayed guitar, but considering i thought the intro to mr jack was on a guitar im guessing this could be true. IMO Best songs are Cigaro, Violent Pornography, and Question! BYOB has some good riffs in it but I don't care for its lyrical content

After another day to listen, I agree with others....the gui**** needs to back off. It's a great CD, but that guy cannot sing. Serj is a big part of the magic that is SOAD.....I sure hope egos don't ruin it.

Question is the best rack on the album. It's growing on me though as a whole.Serj needs to sing more.Daron just isn't as powerful

Why exactly did Daron play the Bass on this album? Isn't that Shavo's job? I love the album, but I was missing Shavo and eventhough Daron's a great guitar player, I'm still a little bothered by his control of this album.

I'm not a fan of much new metal, but these guys are great. I really like the new record. They are one of the only newer metal bands that has an original sound, something to say, and a unique voice in a world of lame ass corporate radio music. I was a little dissapointed with "Steal This" but I think the new record is great.

Another fan of Toxicity here. I think the new album is really good, I like the tuning the bassist uses, gives the songs more character :) My favourite songs have to be BYOB, This Cocaine and Cigaro.
