That seems like a lot of effort to me... Reading tab, for Spain of all things. It ain't easy..

You can find it in any real book almost. Why don't you get a fake book and figure it out? I've been looking at it again lately and it's rough enough without adding tab to the equation... IMO :smug:

I don't know anywhere that has tab of Spain. Good luck though!:D

There's a video of corea playing it on you tube. You can also buy it on i tunes. With those and your ear, You will knock it out easily! Since you read tab, I presume you've got a good ear... Give 'er a shot dude!

Once you're playing music at a certain level (and anything by Chick Corea is way beyond that leve), you need to have a certain level of musical literacy beyond reading tabs. You should either learn the piece by ear, or use a lead sheet (AND your ear).

This isn't a jab at tabs, I'm sure they're useful for some situations.

If you play out in a group setting, they'll call the "light as a feather" version usually.

Bass349, I meant it from the bottom of my little black heart. I didn't always know how to read, and, to tell the truth, your ear is important in any style of music. I believe your ear will save your ass more than knowing how to read on a jazz gig...

Cause if they call the **** in a different key than what's on paper, you are truly "deep in the do!"

If you get a chance, tell us if you found the tab hard or not.

I had been trying to learn the main bass riff in "Spain". The rest of the song wasn't a problem, but I couldn't quite get some of the notes and the rhythm of the riff. I knew I was missing soemthing, but wasn't quite sure what it was.

I usually can pick most stuff up by ear, but that particular riff was really a challenge, so that's why I posted a request for the tab. I got some great response to my posting, including a link to the sheet music and a couple of sets of tabs. One set of tabs was right on the money so I was able to "fill in the holes" and get the right notes plus the right fingering - which for me was critical.

My thanks to everyone for the help.

Jazzponder--- There are a lot of jazz fakebooks, but none of them are specifically bass fakebooks. Some of them will have a page for bass if the tune really requires it. As a rule, you get the melody of the tune (the head), the chord changes, and maybe a bassline to get started. It's not a note-for-note transcription, pretty much always written in treble cleff, and I've never seen tab. Best one out there is "The Real Book", which costs $25 to $30. There are some micro versions that just have the chord changes.

In the rock world, I ran across the "Bass White Pages", which has a partner book "Guitar White Pages", with the same songs. This does have note for note transcriptions, and has tab. Usually the charts are expanded to cover all the choruses and solos, so the charts are LONG. Quite different from the Real Book, which has basically one page or a half page for each song. Lots of songs in the White Pages. About $20.

    Hope this helps.
