That was pretty sick, man. I just picked up the bass again (been playing on and off for 15 years), and that was the kind of inspiration I needed. I ordered the Latin Bass Book yesterday as motivation to work on my sight reading, funny that I came across this.
That was nice but I wouldn't consider that 'Latin' bass playing. Just an arpeggio laden exercise which can be used on any style of music. I played Salsa and Merengue and other Latin styles for many years.
I can't disparage his technique but I have to agree. It's about 15% holding a groove and 85% un-danceable soloing. I'd prefer that ratio tastefully inverted.
Doesn't matter. I think it should be clarified that he is playing arpeggios over a Merengue beat. Arpeggios are not classified by style. They are what they are. That is my only complaint. Otherwise, excellent playing.
Hahahahaha your comment made my day. I was reading the comments and wondered is people knew I was the one in the video.
The thing is I am not playing arpeggios that much here. Most of the time I am playing chromatic passages
But I am playing with a merengue feel otherwise it would not work with the merengue track. Furthermore where is it written in stone that you can't play chromatic passages and arpeggios in merengue or any other genre for that matter
'cause i'm pushing the double nickel and already have some arthritis in one finger joint (middle left hand) and started this all late in life. growing old is not for the weak of mind nor faint of heart...
nope, just the way it is... i'm good with it though. I can keep up a blues pace no problem, and will get faster than that too. The arthritis is nothing compared to having three hips replaced.
Now we're talking. I enjoyed those. And you are an excellent player. As for "Latin" playing, your first video didn't have a definite style other than the Merengue back beat. Your chromatic passages/arpeggios can be played over any rhythm. I was referring to just traditional Latin playing. I played in a few bands, back in NYC, that played all types of Latin & Caribbean (I'm Jamaican/American) music including salsa, merengue, tango, compas, bossa nova, tumbao and bachata. Also other styles derived from a more mainstream genres, such as Latin pop, rock, jazz and reggaeton. Also Reggae and Calypso and some African styles as well. By the way, I'm also 55 and arthritis has slowed my hand speed down considerably!
