So I've gotten this notion that I'd like to take up piano/keys for a couple of reasons:

    1. Add some keys to our tribute band on a few things. Just a touch, but opens up some new possibilities.

    2. Creativity - I'd really like to get back to writing some music on the side and I think this could be a big part of it.

    3. I can't help but think this would improve my bass playing somehow if I took formal lessons (then again, so would formal bass lessons)

Anyone else ever taken up the piano, started out on it, etc. I'm curious as to your experiences.

    Do it.

Playing piano even at a very low level [such as myself] has opened up my ears and mind.

It definitely won't hurt. For me, I like being able to play a chord & see what notes sound best against it.

As far as the 2 hands doing different things-i'm not good at that by any stretch. However, the better I get at that, the easier bass gets.

    best of luck

    Do it.

I played piano before I learnt bass and it helped me immeasurably. I still think of notes in terms of piano keys.
