Picked up a beat-up Ibanez SDGR300 series (older model--the one that looks like the current 200 series) for a song a couple of days ago. Needs a little work, but plays well. It has the DXJ/DXP pickups and an active preamp (if I'm seeing the electronics correctly).

I actually prefer the ease of passive electronics (especially since this one doesn't have a separate battery enclosure). Do I assume correctly that the DXP/DXJ pickups are passive, and the preamp is the only "active" battery-operated entity? If this is true, is there any reason that I couldn't dump the electronics and rewire the DX pickups (passive) in the same manner that other P/J pickups are wired to 3-pot electronics (vol/vol/tone)?

As well, has anyone used the DX pickups in a passive setup and found that they have particualarly good or bad tone/volume on their own?

    Thanks!
