talented pick players

  1. ive been playing bass for a few years now,and i mostly play fingerstyle, but lately, just to be more well rounded,i started playing with a pick, just so i can have another technique at my disposal.
i would like to listen to some bass players that play with a pick,(not the usual punk or metal pick players) and that have some really interesting lines and make use of the pick and the technique well. some song names by the artist would help, if possible.
if someone can suggest a few artists or songs, that would be great.

Hellmut Hattler of Kraan and Tab Two fame.

Great picking style, with cool, inventive lines, often with some chorus and lots of flageolet chording.
And he plays like that since the early 70s!
Definitely deserves more recognition outside of Germany.

The reunited Kraan (German "Krautrock" legend) played nearfest a while back.

check out the end of nam nam on that website

He also has a new solo album out - Mallberry Moon

this is more in the funk/soul vein, no prog

you can download 3 tracks here:

  8. Simon Gallup - The Cure; sinking, lovesong, pictures of you, another journey by train,

Derek Forbes - Simple minds; changeling, I travel, new gold dream, theme for great cities, glittering prize,

JJ Burnel - The Stranglers; nice n' sleazy, genetix, baroque bordello, ain't nothin' to it, tramp, everybody loves you when you're dead,

David Ellefson - Megadeth; my last words, peace sells but who's buying, five magics, poison was the cure, countdown to extinction, warhorse recipe for hate.

    Matt Freeman (rancid):

best examples: "maxwell murder", "Axiom", "corozon de oro", "rejected", "radio"

he's probably THE most talented player with a pick.
  12. you beat me to it! maxwell murder is fun but the solo always kicks my ass.

Yea i know what ur talkn about man. I never played with a pick when i first started, i actually was really against picks. But lately i have been using one.

David Allen (GlassJaw)- Mu empire, babe, ape dos mil. Few examples or of great glassjaw songs.
  16. I could not agree more. Helmutt is one of the most incredible bassists ever. It's hard to understand why this monster is not an international superstar of bass. Anyone not familiar with this genius should rush right out and get Kraan Live. Everyone I play his stuff to sit's spellbound and slack jawed.
  17. thanks for the replies i'll check all those guys out.
