I use Google to search because it's so efficient at finding old threads for me. When I did tonight-- look at what I came upon... and this isn't bogus.. there are members there actually talking about bass!!! Anyone know what this is about???

EDIT: As I clicked through the website, all the links, pages, and topics looked like a nearly identical talkbass....!

I saw this yesterday too. Probably just an advertising scheme.

I'm amazed at how similar all the topics look. Under amps for sale there's even a "How to not get ripped off on the internet." I'm surprised there isn't a sticky on how to ship an Ampeg SVT!
  5. All of us, even yourself are actually on that site posting. Yes, there is an @alaskaleftybass at that site posting the exact same words as you.

Do not go to it again.
Our TalkBass leader @paul will take care of it. Again. :rage:

It’s a Chinese copy of TalkBass. Might be malicious so don’t visit. So far I’ve had google take down 400 urls, will continue to submit DMCA notices until it’s squashed.

huh? *looks at calendar* uhhh, it's not April 1 so i'll guess this isn't a parody thread. Are you serious? There are chinese fake websites now? At the risk of being obtuse, may I ask why? What's the point?

As @paul said, could be malicious - most obvious purpose would be to deliver malware to people who went there thinking they were going here. Or maybe they're selling advertisements on it.

I think talk-bass underrated. There is a great contributor there named Jimmie M who answers all your questions about Sampeg amps and cabs.

I wouldn't trust that -qwertyu- guy on talk-bass, though.

Be careful you don't leave the 'b' out, though, when typing the URL.

It's shady looking. Probably a "near name" scam being set up. Registered through GoDaddy by an entity in Hong Kong named Canon Zone with an email address [email protected] So now it's looking even less on the up & up.

If the content looks identical they're probably scraping content from this and other websites for clickbaiting or even less legitimate reasons.

If they are scraping content, TB can send their host GoDaddy a DMCA notice to remove the scraped content.

Best bet with these things is to put them on notice early and hard that you're watching and already on to them before they get fully established. Most times they'll fold their tent and move onto the next hopefully easier target if you put a stop to it soon enough.

Godaddy is just the registrar, they won't do anything to take the domain down because all responsibility falls on the host of the content. Unfortunately the site's hosted in Hong Kong, so the likelihood of getting anything done there is nil. Gotta get it at the search-engine level.

We can't block these guys at the server level, because it's not a live scrape we can't see anything real-time in the logs. The people that do this sort of thing have figured out they don't need to do a live scrape to get listed in search engines - the copy they have of TalkBass might be months old.

I'm going to install an add-on that sniffs for scrapers and bots sending tons of requests to TB. Might help stop this sort of thing from happening in the future. But if you have 20 tabs of TalkBass open in your browser and refresh them all at the same time you might get blocked... so we'll see how it goes ;)
