    I've got an idea!

(It's not original - others have suggested it before, but it never seemed to take off.)

We throw around little buzzwords about tone but never really explain the terms. As an example, describe "growl" to a Martian. Or "punch". Or "fart" (as in Jack Bruce's Blind Faith era tone).

Why don't we start a thread giving examples of various tone concepts, and in which questions about how to uniformly describe something can be asked?

I'll start out - how would you describe John Paul Jones' tone on Led Zep II, particularly on the "Thank You" and "Ramble On" tracks?
  2. deep, full low end. thick, but not prominent low mids. alternating contrast of smooth sustain and quick staccato bouncing fingerstyle phrases.
    subdued high mids.
    highs? mmm, not much.

similar to the classic flatwound Motown sound, but maybe less high mid punch due to J bass being used instead of P.

to close, full-bodied, fruity flavour with a pleasant aftertaste:p

You must mean Cream, Rick Grech played bass in Blind Faith, not Jack Bruce.

That is the best idea, Phil. Things like punch and growl are so subjective. It would be nice to actually hear what someone's idea of the term's is.

Allodox has volunteered to host a site with sound samples of different basses, I believe.
