This past Friday was the 1st gig with my new U2 Tribute band, The Electric Co. We got the middle slot of a 3 band gig at the Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa, CA. This is the first time that I have played this venue. Rolling up it was cool to see our name on the marquee. The stage was decent sized, and they had a pretty good PA and a sound guy! No humping a PA for me tonight. I'm finishing up my setup dance. My rig was an Ampeg PF800 with GED 2112 Pre amp, PF 210HE and PF 115HE. I got to use my new Sansamp YYZ pedal. It added the right amount of growl to my tone (I can't recommend this pedal enough). I used my Geddy Lee bass for a few songs and then switched to my Honeyburst Precision with Geddy neck for the rest of the set. Lighting wasn't that great so I don't have too many photos from the gig. I am working to get some video and see what I can pull from it. This was our guitarist's first gig ever. He did a great job and even plays the keyboard parts during New Year's Day. These guys are great to play with. We all stay in our sonic spaces so everyone shines. A couple of my friends that have seen me in other bands said I never sounded better. We played for an hour and had a pretty good crowd toward the end. We got a lot of compliments on our sound. All in all it was a pretty good night. We are just getting started and already have a line on two or three gigs. Sorry, no food pics, I ate when I got home.
Good review, looks like fun, thanks for the review. Funny how we all apologize about not getting food pics thanks to BassCliff,
Hi @TBPlayerOC, This looked like a fun night. I could dig being in a U2 tribute. That stadium rock is good for my ego. You're local enough that I can try to make one of your gigs. My 19 year old daughter likes my "Dad rock" music. We go see Beatles (Fab 8, Abbey Road, Ticket To Ride), Journey (DSB), Led Zepagain, and other tributes all the time. Fun stuff. You've got a nice rig. Thanks for sharing your gig. P.S. Perhaps I play the "starving musician" card a little too often. Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
Thanks Cliff. I will keep you posted on our upcoming gigs. This is a pretty easy gig for a bass player. Adam Clayton, for the most part, just holds down the bottom playing root notes. With or Without You is a decent song but the bass line is soooo boring
Hi, Yes, please do. Do you guys have a website with a calendar? Maybe a Facebook page? I know the bass lines are not that challenging but they are fun tunes. In situations like that I just knock out the root eighth notes on autopilot and wink at all the pretty girls. Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
Besides my compressor, the YYZ is an "always on" pedal. In this setting it helps thicken up my sound to fill in the spaces during the guitar solos. The two main U2 tributes in the area both playing to tracks and are heavily over produced, IMO. This might be a major factor in why they are where they are. Me, I prefer to do the songs live without backing tracks. For the moment we just have two samples that we trigger and they are fairly short.
I'd like to hear your band sometime. Ever get to Vegas? I had Bono on my plane once. We took him back to Dublin. Nice guy. I missed a chance to see them in SLC in 82 or 83. They were playing in a small place somewhere. I don't think they were quite as famous as they are now. Good job!
We are just getting the band started. Right now we are just focusing on the local area but I am sure the band wouldn't mind doing some gigs in Vegas
Hey Hey Jim, the guitar sounds great in the mix and according to the guitarist is a lot lighter than his Les Paul. Beyond that I can't say much more since I am just the bass player
Ah, the good ol' Tiki Bar. An iconic local place. I played there a few times many years ago. For sure let us know the next time you're there. I'll try to stop by.
