My dillema: I want to get as close to an all tube SVT sound without buying the SVT because I CANNOT afford one at this time.

    What I can afford:
    $200-$300 tops.

What I'm currently using: A '74 p-bass w/ '62 "original" reissue pickups through a GK 800RB into an Ampeg 4x10 HLF. I also use an Aguilar 924 outboard.

Style of Play: My style of play ranges from pop to punk / hard rock to country.

    What I'm considering:
Using one of the following w/ the GK:
    a) Tech 21 RBI RackMount Bass Driver/Di
    or
    b) SVP Pro preamp
    or
    c) Some type of onboard or outboard preamp instead of or in conjunction w/ the
    Aguilar.

Any opinions/advice on solving my dillema or on the considerations I'm considering?

Any opinions on what is the most versatile set-up in regards to playing gigs and recording?

    Thanks.

I'm sure you're aware that you are asking the impossible. Neither the SVP-Pro nor the RBI are going to get you the SVT Classic tone, especially when run through the GK800RB. In general, the SVP will get you closer, but its not as versatile or adept for recording as the RBI. Also, the SVP's are typically a tad noisy, which may or may not bother you personally - I've found that as a studio pre they are too noisy to use, YMMV.

If you go with either of them, you might want to ditch the Aguilar outboard, it will be just too many pre's in the signal chain, and you might want to run the output of the pre that you choose into the effects return of the 800RB, to avoid the GK tonal coloration on top of your SVT-like goals.

    Sulphur La,
I would really save all my duckies till I could get the SVT. Wait and get EXACTLY what you want. In the short term you will be perhaps disappointed with your tone, but in the long term you will be much happier. I think anyway. If you still must choose something now, I would go with the Sansamp. Love to all!:)
