Temped by a SWR Megoliath but what about spare parts for it?

    Hi,

It was my dream cab for many many years, but unfortunatly, here un Europe it's impossible to find one.
I finally managed to find and try one yesterday. What a cab!
I would have took if I didn't by the Fender NEO 810 2 months ago. Two 810 are totally overkill especially these days.
But if the cab is still for sell within one or two months, I might finally decide myself for it.
According to the seller, who owns a rental company, it's been almost never been used. He bought it for the Little Richard's bassist tour in 2005. The bass player asked 4 of these........ True story.

What about the spare parts? Especially the speakers? Is it still possible to find some? I know the Eminence CA10 is the perfect replacement for the Goliath III, but you can't load the GIII speakers in the Megoliath. If I remember correctly, its' not the same of it might cause impedance issues.

    Thanks

    Yes, I have some feedback.

    1. the original speakers are no longer available, they are custom to SWR.

    2. The BP102 and CA-10 are both different speakers and quite different from each other.

    3. The CA-10 is probably closer, but I haven’t looked at this in any detail for years. I would certainly do the math before recommending anything.

What king of math? To find the correct TS parameters?

Thanks for your input. I'll start with that but I also sent an email to Eminence.

The mid voicing of the stock speaker is somewhat unique and contributes to the SWR sound.

It looks like you're implying there are actually no replacement parts for the Megoliath?

Correct, there are no correct, identical replacement parts.

It comes down to finding something “close enough “.

With replacement speakers, all you have is an SWR cabinet with whatever response and character that different drivers provide. It won't be an SWR speaker. This is why I always recommend verifying that a used speaker has the correct factory drivers installed. I think we have seen enough examples of this sort of thing gone wrong around here, eh?

    Oh yeah.
However, I'm 100% sure it had the factory drivers installed. And the cab was in graet condition

Then as long as you don't blow it up, there's no problem.

I'm also thinking about some "accident" on the road.

Did one of the other contemporary SWR cabs use those same drivers?
If so, you might be able to find a 4x10 you could get just to have the drivers as backups.

The drivers from the 410 are different. If i remember correctly you can't use them for the 810.
Direct replacement for the 410 is the Eminence CA10. I whish I could simply use them on the 810. I'll see what Eminence will reply.

You could possibly find several drivers that may work, but none would have the original sound of that cab.

If you're interest in it is in that stock sound, then you buy it knowing that if you blow or damage a driver, that is it.

This too is not an exact replacement, it's reasonably close but not identical.
