Been trying to find some info on this old girl. Was told by the the guy I bought it off (who bought it new sometime in the 70s) that they were made in Japan by tempo/merson guitars and distributed to schools around Australia for students. I set it up with a nice low action and straightened out the neck, plays very nice with these nylon wound strings.
    Anyone got more info ?

Is that pickup a replacement or did they actually make a '51 style P with a '57 scpu?

The huge surround suggests the former.

I thought they were the original pickups, but you may be right I've personally never seen that sort of added on pickguard arrangement before. Whatever the case may be they do sound pretty nice, compared to my fender 63 AVRI P bass I'd say its somewhat similar in terms of quality of tone. (Playing through aan old GK 800rb with a bergantino 2×10 cab)
Also the frets are very flat..as in it almost feels like a fretless.

I wonder if there are any unmolested examples out in the wild?

Haha yeah I cant seem to find any that resemble this one. There's a few out there with a Teisco style head stock etc but no tele style P basses.
