I am looking to add a tenor or piccolo tuned bass to my current stage set up for extended range soloing. I know a lot of bass players would suggest a six string but I just prefer the 4-string (sort of like how Stanley Clarke will use a piccolo bass for his solos).

Does anyone have any suggestions for small / medium scale basses to use for this? I was thinking of a hot roding a Fender Mustang (maybe a reissue first to see if I like the feel and then invest in a vintage).

For tenor any regular bass will do just fine.
    Danelectros do wonders for piccolo.

So is it more a thing to find someone that will understand how to set it up for a tenor or piccolo?

  4. I think you can get special strings and do it on a long scale bass

I buy my Piccolo bass strings from Ken Smith. I've been using
a long scale five string set for more than 10 years.
D'addario makes a couple of sets for 4 strings
    .
Use a spare bass and through the strings on. You should
be able to lower the action quite a bit.
Then redo your intonation and you should be good to go.

If you want to keep a certain bass in this tuning for good,
get a good luthier to put on a new nut for your chosen
    string gauge.

I just put up another instrumental tune titled Reunion up on My Space using my piccolo Bass

    The bass is a Hartke 5 I bought for a $100.
I put EMG's in it and a new nut.
The narrow string spacing is nice for this tuning.

Good luck and have fun with it!

I've strung my Soundgear piccolo for a while with GHS strings and had great experiences. Likewise, D'Addario has some good piccolo strings. I prefer a 34" for pic basses, thats just me.
