I'll be off in about an hour as I've stumpled across a good deal for a pedal I want - a MXR P90 - but the seller lives quite outside of town(no car atm) and I have to go to his workplace to meet up.

Is it possible to test it with an cellphone audio player or a similar device?

You'll need something on both ends.
I've tested pedals with a Jamman Looper and an amp.

Yeah that would be headphones. Can't haul an 25kg amp there as his workplace is in the outskirts aswell. Hope the phones are fine.

Wouldn't I need an oscilloscope for an phaseshifter? Sorry, if I didn't get the joke.

Sorry, wasn't that good a joke. What about one of those jack headphone thingies?

Yeah, got one of those, more concerned if the cell phone as a source would suffice.

no need for clogging up your phone with another app. you can just play anything from your music collection- if it comes through phasey, you'll notice it.

    need to bring:
    headphones
    h/p amp
    #2 phillips head screwdriver
    9v battery
    aux cable and 1/4" adapter
phone with at least one song in it

and a macgruber joke, if you like.

I'm pretty fond of trying out amps by playing the radio through them. It gives me an instant view of how flat it can get and helps guide my ears when I'm having a hard time finding a real flat setting as a starting point. It's an habit I took back when I played double bass and I kept it. A small amp and/or something to drive headphones is enough to try out a pedal and see if it works fine.
    Good luck.

I have a roland battery powered combo for this reason. Its great for testing out basses and pedals.

Had everything with me, but forgot the screwdriver on my desktop. Nonetheless bought it and it works just fine. Thanks for all the advices.
