The Alembic is legendary. I'd love to try one of those some day. But that's a conversation for another thread, lol. We need a Scubaduba "testing rackmount preamps" thread so we can all continue to live through him vicariously.

Oh my. The thought of that is both exhilarating and downright anxiety filled. I will say I have a Quad Cortex and somebody captured the Alembic F2B. I've downloaded it and have been playing around with it some. It does sound fantastic.

    On second thought . . .

I'm really happy (again) with my rack pre. I don't need a reason to spend any more money.

Yeah, don't do it. I don't need to re-think my entire set up. A quick look at Reverb found a Rane for $200, a Demeter 201 for $600, I didn't look for a power amp.

$200 Rane plus $600 Demeter isn't any more than an Effectrode LA-1A and Oracle or REDDI or Noble or.... :D

That being said, even with my Demeter or my new Sansamp RBI and the Rane in the effects loop of either of them, everything still sounds better with the Empress Bass Comp in front. That tone switch to the left is such a sweet bass boost. It is unlike anything I can do with the eq options I have at my disposal through either preamp or other pedals that I have. I don't know what the secret is. They're just boosting the frequencies at the right places for me or something. So I have to keep the Empress in front set for low compression, just for that tonal sweetness. It's pure magic. It's one of those things that makes me smile when I play a note, and then makes me grumpy when I turn it off.

Time and time again. Probably from me, lol. It's a classic for a reason.

Compare the LAB to the CB, those will be at opposite ends of the tonal spectrum in my opinion.

IDK, but you definitely need an Empress Bass Compressor on your list. It's amazing.

Empress is definitely next on my must-try list! Just waiting on the coming-soon updated version, with the passive-bass fix.
Compressor GAS is a powerful force.

I guess I used mine with my passive bass just fine.
