I don't think that producers or engineers in general are using less compression on bass although some the new stuff can nearly make the signal a flat line yet still musical. (OK overexageration) I think the player makes the biggest difference. Over the last 5 years I hear more limiting on music, especially bus compressing the stereo mix. This new hi tech gear can really even out the dynamics of an instrument or mix so that the needles stand straight up yet it doesn't sound that compressed at all. SSL has one that is pretty amazing and used a lot. TV has really figured out how to pound you at loud volume with ads yet it doesn't sound like mush. Subtle is good for signal to house or console (something like 3-5 dB at a reasonable ratio) and hopefully you have a good mixer that can use the gear to represent the band in the best possible sonic light.
