Anyone bought one of the new basses that Ampeg
came out with earlier this year? I saw it at the
Nashville NAMM show, picked it up and thumped on
it for about 5 seconds with no amp, and then put
it back on the stand. If you have (had?) one,
what did you think, how much did you pay for it,
and how would you describe the tone?

    What "new" bass?

They reissued the Dan Armstrongs a couple of years ago and then followed up with the Armstrong-like "Crystal Cut bass" that gives you a Duncan MM pickup, adjustable bridge and wood body. But it's not new, been out a few years already.

The Crystal Cuts list for about a grand, online dealers are asking $650-700. I've never actually seen one in a store. Ampeg has been blowing out the guitar models recently (delaers dumping them for $300), maybe the basses will be next.

I got one off ebay for 350 with a case... They are so fun to play... but I'm sure I'll get lazy from playing a short scale

I went and looked at Ampeg's web site - it's
definitely the Crystal Cut bass that I played at
the NAMM show. They had a big sign on it
"new for 2001" - and not being a gear junkie I
didn't realize it had been out for some time
already. Still, anyone here own one of these?
    What's your reaction to it?

  5. I don't own one, but I have played one in the store. I didn't really care for the feel. They're heavy, plus the bridge is closer to the neck so there's some body back there, so it's hard to get used to. I didn't plus it in so I don't know about the sound.
