I guess this is finally "finished" since I put on the ETS bridge and solved all my string spacing and intonation problems.

About 12 years ago my kids weren't playing but I wanted to build them a bass that could easily be righty or lefty. Both my sons are lefty and I wanted to make it for them.

I didn't have anything but a drill, a saber saw, a Dremel, and some hand tools, so I got two 1x8s that sat nice and flush together so I didn't have to mill them.

I sawed each in half and bookmatched them the best I could and cut out this wonky symmetrical body using dinner plates for radiuses.
The top half of the body I notched out for the neck and the pickup before I glued them, and the bottom I drilled and dremeled out channels for wires and a control cavity.

The neck was from a cheap Sierra bass and the tuners and hardware from a Yamaha my bassist at the time destroyed on stage.
I made it he pickguards out of clear plexi and painted the back black. IMG_20181119_202453646. IMG_20181119_202503458. IMG_20181119_202517406. IMG_20181118_205531416.

    The pickup is from Guitarfetish.
Just got the bridge at a music swap meet.

I'm highly opinionated and extremely self-assured
All kinds of awesome. Are your kids playing these days?

I would absolutely play the hell outta that. Have you built other basses or instruments?

My eldest plays sax. The younger plays everything EXCEPT bass. Guitar, trombone, cornet, keys...

They do everything righty except hold a pen.
I have this set up righty for me, and my bassist in my current band (I'm drumming) won't put it down.
It has a mean mid-range growl that fits really well in the mix.

I build effects pedals, but this is it for instruments.
I've been restoring and tinkering with busted stuff for 30 years, though.

I scrolled down to find a much cooler looking bass than I was expecting... still kind of odd ball but in a good way...

It's nice to see "parental Awesome" in action, that's a sweet bass you made for your kids.
