That time when I didn't get gig because my bass was strapped too high.

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by bassrique, Dec 4, 2019.

  1. I was reminiscing about the time I didn't get the gig because I looked like a "geeky/dorky" jazz fusion player and not a rocker. I was angrier than a mosquito in a mannequin factory. "I 'm not a geek, nor a dork you jerks, That's the clean version. I sure told them. I was right and they were idiots. They tried out other players came back with an apology and my bass humbly strung at rock level. Got the gig.

I would've kept it up high for the recall...but that's just me.

Funny, because I got an audition from a band I eventually joined for a number of years solely because the piano player saw a bad audio quality video of my playing with my bass above the belt. He felt if I played like that, I must have studied somewhere. I sure fooled him! But I still got the gig after an audition.

  6. You wouldn't have lowered six inches or so just to tell them you are auditioning in good faith? (or told only them you did) haha

    I would have turned them down in a nice professional way UNLESS;
    1) I was desperate and wanted to play out.
    2) Their band/music/genre was right up my alley in 'MY' comfort zone.
    3) Reasonable driving distance from me.
    4) Not a start-up band, gigs on the books...most claim they do.
    5) Other band-members seems likeable.
You had the nerve to turn me down straight-up,then call me back? Hmm?
I don't think my standards are as high as my guitar profile.

Nope, I'm a take me as I am or get someone else kind of guy.

If I was in the mood I guess I could lower it, get the gig and then turn it down.

Unless I was really desperate for a gig, I would have returned with the bass strapped up under my chin. :D

  10. I don’t get the bass way up high thing. But I also don’t get the bass way down low like the Ramones thing either. I say everything in moderation, people, including moderation.....

George and John strapped ‘em on pretty high…

  12. With the bass strapped high, I can for instance hammer on a major third without an open string. I can play four string arpeggios blending like a chord anywhere. I like staccato, and I like to smoothly blend. I like the whole neck.

  13. Maybe your fly was open.

Is it me, or did Chris Squire actually start wearing his higher as his career went on?

I answered an ad in 1999 that basically read:
"Does your bass have more than 4 strings? Does your speaker cab have a tweeter? Then we DON'T want you! Influences Petty, the Band...."
    Pretty funny I thought.

  19. I play two basses with high c strings. No tweeters in my little light weight rig. I am still out of consideration of the ad. I could make an argument though..... and bring a four string.
