Box Bass (the cardboard box upright bass) owners stand up and be counted! (Literally, I will be assigning member#s) Share your pics, any pertanent details about your bass, and your thoughts on it (pros/cons) The rules: Must be of like kind with the Bogdon Box Bass, though may be any brand, or even home made. May be stock or modified, may be constructed or just in your ownership waiting to be constructed...like mine. Preferably, it'll be constructed and you'll have some valuable practical experience with it.
I don't have any pics for this one, unfortunately. I have it, but have yet to assemble it. As it comes, it's only a two string bass. Great, if all I'm gonna do is old "Presidents of the United States of America" covers, but othewise a little lacking. The reason I haven't put it together yet is that I've been looking into ways to modify it into a 4 string without going nuts doing it. Anybody have any suggestions?
this is the box bass played in the very first youtube video (800,000 views to date) Cardboard Upright Bass - YouTube
here's a photo of me playing the box bass at our junior high school Civil War Cotillion Dance...I was a sober General Grant, the band consisted of a couple fiddles, a mando, a guitar and me sitting in occasionally on the Box bass... lots of square dancing other sorts of vintage acoustic folk tunes...
Here's a couple photos of my Bogdon Box Bass build and modifications. I added about $4 of internal oak dowels and bracing strips, and I added an ebay $8 cello end-post and I added a couple of *FREE* old bass tuners to the neck from my luthier's old parts box... I modded the bass in the interest of durability and perhaps a bit beefier tone and tuning stability...I've had mine 3 years so far and love to play it all the time!
My son got me one of these for Christmas. It was a 2 string model, but I contacted Alan at Bogdon support to see about adding the third string. I have finished the stock construction and the 3rd string mod but have decided to go another step and am changing the fingerboard by adding a 36" wedge onto the top of the existing fingerboard so I can make a taller bridge. I think this will also give me some more volume. JCW--This might be the way for you to do the 4 string thing also. Will do some pics when I'm done. I also plan some changes to the tuners, but have not worked it all out yet. I just don't want to overdo things. The simplicity and sound of the original design is so good that I don't want to screw it up. Will keep you all apprised.
Sorry Bogdon, don't have any box bass sound files posted anywhere yet. When I load some, I'll post notice here!
Can I get a number for the club please. I haven't played my 3-string box bass in a while but I have been really thinking upgrading it to a 4 string and starting using it again, especially for recording. Here is a pic http://www.flickr.com/photos/63370564@N08/8023825117/
I bought the Bogdon 3 string bass. One of the strings broke right from the beginning. I replaced it with weedwacker string because the string costs too much. # years ago I payed bass for a 22 piece Big Band and would pull it out for "Sioux City Sue" The singer (One of the sax players) wore cap guns and a straw hat This is the kind of stuff old people do LOL. Can I get my first club # now? The only club I ever was a member of was the Ugly Suckers Motorcycle Club (USMC). LOL Now we need a Ubass club Weedwacker String -
