The Devil Went Down To Florida

Discussion in 'Bass Humor & Gig Stories [BG]' started by SundanceChile, Oct 4, 2005.

  1. For everyone who's a fan of The Devil Went Down To Georgia and Jaco Pastorius, i "wrote" this song for you guys. Funny little tune IMO, i'm thinking about bringing this version to my band for a cover at one of our gigs.

The Devil Went Down To Florida

The devil went down to Florida
He was lookin' for a soul to steal
He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind
And he was willing to make a deal

When he came across this young man
Jamming on a bass and playing it hot
And the devil jumped up on an old swamp ash stump
And said, "Boy let me tell you what

"I guess you didn't know it
But I'm a great bass player too
And if you'd care to take a dare
I'll make a bet with you"

"Now you play pretty good bass, son
But give the devil his due
I bet a bass of gold against your soul
'Cause I think I'm better than you"

The boy said "My name's Jaco
And it might be a sin
But I'll take your bet and you're gonna regret
'Cause I'm the best that's ever been"

Jaco you grease up your fingers
    And play your bass funky
'Cause Hell's broke loose in Florida
And the devil deals the cards

    And if you win
You get this shiny bass made of gold
    But if you lose
    The devil gets your soul

The devil openned up his case
And he said "I'll start this show"
And fire flew from his fingertips
As he warmed up his thumb

And he slapped the bass across the strings
And it made an evil hiss
Then a band of demons joined in
And it sounded something like this

(bass solo, something along the lines of Anesthesia(Pulling Teeth)

When the devil finished Jaco said
"Well you're pretty good, old son
But sit down in that chair right there
And let me show you how its done"

America the beautiful, let the flag run
Donna Lee's making sure you know how it's done
Miller in the club, playing rather lo'
Hoppus does your bass groove, no child no

(Something along the lines of Slang solo)

    The devil bowed his head
Because he knew that he'd been beat
And he laid that golden bass
On the ground at Jaco's feet

Jaco said "Devil, just come on back
If you ever want to try again
But I told you once, you son of a bitch
I'm the best that's ever been"

    He played
America the beautiful, let the flag run
Donna Lee's making sure you know how it's done
Miller in the club, playing rather lo'
Hoppus does your bass groove, no child no

enjoy! :D :bag: <----waiting for flack from blink fans(shudder)

  2. change the bass of gold into a spalted maple body and ash FB bass and you might have yourself a song.

Actually I was going to do some open mic and do something of the sort.

play jacos solo on a 6!!! just to be blasphemis and get flammed!

  3. lol, i was thinking about something along the lines of custom, but to each his own right? personally, i wouldn't mind a neckthrough ash body with an ebony neck.

Not really - about 90% of it is 'lifted' straight from another song - and Jaco was never famous for "strumming" his bass! :meh:

  6. true, this was about a 10 min job, but when i refer to "strumming" i meant the chords of harmonics on portrait of tracy.

I would still call that "plucking"...?

    I would call THAT nitpicking....

But that's what we love you for, Bruce.

Well no - strumming is a distinct technique and not the same as plucking - I think as bass players we should be clear about this!

Jaco is not strumming on POT....:meh:

  11. changed it to "jamming" for the sake of being politicaly correct, but it is true, the more we know the more we don't know eh bruce? :D

CDB is the band to end all bands. :D

Nice rendition...but you can't play it live. Unless you want to get lynched. The song is to classic, and rednecks do not like a classic song changed. Even people who are not into country/southern rock know this song.

If you do play it live make sure you are behind some chicken wire(so the beer bottles wont hit you in the head) . :) :D

  13. well i'm living in the town on the edge of the beach, so if i were to drop this song down at the catalyst, i don't think anyone would care so much, as much as they would get a kick out of it.(not to mention the bassists who would be cheering in memoriam of jaco ;) )

  14. exactly. :bawl:
