I hope posting this here is acceptable. I was thinking about the old basses and how they were tuned. For example, many bach pieces have notes going below what the "standard" bass offers. This was mostly played by the Violone and other continuo instruments. Hence I wonder, did these instruments play one octave higher (many violoni and gamas were five, six or even seven stringed, right?), or were they like modern five-strings? I know this is a hard subject, I've red quite well researched material that mostly pointed out all the inconsistencies and did not answer very much. But I thought I'd post the question here, and see what TB knows.
