Beautiful! Put some black tape-wounds on that baby and it'll be stealthy for sure. Or white tapes for those "formal" gigs...

Question for the group and maybe on the luthier side. I have a fretless jazz with a highly figured Birdseye maple neck and fretboard. Looks great, sounds good but is sloooowww and sticky! The neck has a high gloss and I never thought about how slow it was until I picked up my parts p (satin neck) and gloss neck is night and day! Any suggestions on improving the jazz? This neck is sticky on both sides, I have rubbed the back down with steel wool, helped a little but not much.

I can relate. Keep going with the wool until it feels like your parts bass neck. I also keep a stick of Fast Fret in my gig bag for when it gets too bad.

I switched to tape wound strings too and that seems to help a lot. Plus I dig the tone.

Interesting that your mention tapewounds. I put some labella golds on and I am not sure I like them. Great sound but different feel.

I love the gold, but tapes are not for everyone.

In my experience, I found the Labella Tapewound 60s have very similar tension and feel as the Deep Talkin' 45s. 60s also give that little extra beef on the low end you are probably missing. ;) I had to special order 60s in gold from Sweetwater and would do it again.

Try a Scotch Brite green pad instead. It's a little more aggressive than the steel wool. Afterwards, put some car wax on the back of the neck to keep it smooth.

Hey, I think this may be my first post on TB. I've got here a Fender Deluxe Jazz Body that I slapped a warmoth neck on. The roasted maple and ebony looks great with the red in my opinion.

I’m seriously considering placing an order for an Emerald Balor 5-string fretless! I inquired about a 6-string build, but I was told they’re not doing any more 6 string basses.

Hey just an update, 30 minutes with a scotch brite pad and some nano wax and it is nite and day difference! Thanks for the advice. A few more guitar might get this treatment!!

Here's my first effort recording on a fretless. I'm still a bit of a novice at recording and only have minimal gear but have a decent studio room with some bass trap treatment in the corners.
    Equipment used was;
    • Focusrite 18i20
    • Reaper on a laptop with the built-in VST's
    • Two AT2020 condenser mics for vocals and violin
    • Bass DI'd from bass amp into the interface
    • Guitar DI'd from his pedal board
    • Drums are a cajon with kick pedal and a tambo with kick pedal. I then converted the peaks of these tracks into midi to get a better drum sound. I play the kick/snare pedals and bass at the same time, hence the pretty basic drums and bass lines.

Excellent playing and nice open airy production. Good work! I've not heard that song before, but I think it might be heading for my set-list.

Thanks Tim. I was pretty happy with the results for a bunch of amateurs.

The Waifs are one of our favorite bands. If you like it they have a very extensive song collection.
