i disagree the heaviest riff of all time is meshuggah's neurotica not a bunch of FREAKS IN BELL BOTTOMS AND TIGHTS
Ha! Great riff, and an amazing song... but lord... c'mon. Heaviest riff for it's time? Perhaps yes. But I think Sabbath was cranking out even heavier riffs at that time, and predating that.
and playing it tuned down with more distortion doesnt make it heavier either, just makes it louder and more distorted in franketstein the major walk up line is not heavy at all, and really too hard to recover from since its so giddy the first few notes of dazed and confused is more like it, or the lead in line by geezer on warpigs, heavy in appraoch heavy in that it is not franticly trying to convince someone that is heavy like all this new crap that is considered heavy listen to some beethoven he made lightly played piano notes sound heavy, same with chopin heavy like johnny unitas throwing a touchdown pass and not celebrating just unhooking his chin stap and walking to the sideline.. while the ball was still in mid air...
'Dance of the Maya' from the first Mahavishnu Orchestra LP. John McLaughlin through Marshall stacks. Can't possibly play this cut loud enough. I play "Frankenstein" in one of my current bands. I use an 8 string and just crank it. Never fails to make me feel like I'm 13 again.
Heaviest Riff of all time.... For my money, it's Sleep's The Druid: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZVn6Kkn-eMo
Please, a little respect o young metallic one. From these spandex loins sprang forth all manner of future heaviness. And they didn't have pre fab heavy tones in 'pods' with which to slay thee. Nay, they were forged from nothing...
forsooth!! he speaketh truly! he speaketh as one who hath aquired knowledge from the wandering of the world and now descends from on high to bequeath such knowledge unto our mortal ears! silence, all, as great tales i'm sure will unfold...
Well, not quite from "nothing." Blue Cheer Pink Floyd -check The Nile Song and other bands had already started rocking metal for all it was worth before the Winters brothers got close. Johnny Winters shreds, though. EDIT: and in the liner notes of his second album, Second Winter, there is a mention that they added another side because if they fit all the songs onto one vinyl record the volume would've dropped, and he wasn't having that.
Ritchie Blackmore & Deep Purple - "Smoke on the Water" opening riff ^^ Good call, o obscure one!! Off of the soundtrack for "More". Rox my iPod!
