The Lightweight Amps and Cabs Reference Thread

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by therealting, Dec 27, 2005.

  1. There seem to be a lot of threads by folks asking for recommendations on ultralight amps and cabs... so I thought it might be an idea to have a kind of reference post containing a list of all the different ultralight amps and cab manufacturers available.

I'll start with this list, which I found on a website, but I can't remember where it was - let me know if you know and I'll happily credit it.

Please feel free to add suggestions to the thread, I will try and update the list in this first post as new ones are pointed out to me.

If you want to add a suggestion, please help out by providing as much of the listed information as possible. Most helpful would be to follow the table format as above.

This thread is NOT intended to be a discussion of which amp or cab is better, only to be a list.

I have started a separate thread asking for the definition of "ultralight", please add your comments about that there:

  6. Thanks for the contributions, Fuzzhead.

Would it be possible to indicate whether you are speccing an amp or a cab, find out the speaker configs, etc?

It would be nice to set the precedent, once this gathers steam I may not be able to look up individual cabs and amps for specs, and as I'm not familiar with everything out there, I may not even know if they are amps or cabs...

    Much appreciated.

    Looking for complete heads only?
If not, Bose has an interesting power amp, the Packlite:
    250W@4ohms, 3lbs/1.4kg, 140x56x258mm/5.6x2.3x10.3".

Add an EBS Microbass2, a Samsamp or similar and enjoy!

EBS Fafner isn´t a tube amp. It has tube after its pre-amp but the power amp is MOSFET so I´d put it to "hybrid" division.

  10. Thanks for the list. A couple of comments.

Your Eden and AI listings are for older models. For Eden, the 550 is correct, but now the 330 is called the 405. AI... the Clarus and Focus are lighter and more powerful for series III.

I also wouldn't include the Fafner as a small head... it's 3 rack spaces.

Finally, don't forget the ultimate light cab line, the EpifaniUL's.

Well, you can get specs and prices on the thunderfunk stuff at www.thunderfunk.com. Weight is about 15lbs, and price is about $1200, but for sure niether of those is exact.
The Schroeder mini 112, and 1210/1212, and even 410/21012 seem to fit in the spec range you're working with. Also, don't forget the Jorg is working on neo fitted boxes made of lighter weight materials..."Schroeder Lights" might be available for Spring NAMM...the Light version of the 310212 would fit your current spec range then;)
Definately need to get the Markbass gear in there:
    http://www.markbass.it/
Mark's stuff is pretty fly-weight like the AI stuff...the Little Mark II 500 watt head is under 6lbs!

    neat thread.

  12. Thanks everyone for the comments and corrections. I have added the WW, add the MarkBass stuff, fixed the AI specs as per the website, and added Thunderfunk's pricing which I previously missed.

I couldn't find the weights on the Schroeder website, but maybe I'm just tired! :)

I would add Epifani to both the amps and cabs section.

  14. Done!

I'm really amazed and just how much choice there is in the ultralight category nowadays, especially with amps. Even with the current list, there is plenty to be considering for any player.

If anyone is able to provide pricing info for the incomplete entries, that would be awesome.

  16. Added pricing for Epifani.

  17. Does anyone here have a AI product? How good are they?

  18. I have a Focus Series II... very similar to the new Series III in sound.

I mainly use it for jazz type gigs and rehearsal. Very warm and plenty loud, but isn't really voiced for a lot of punch with electric bass (it's primarily designed for DB). However, if you don't need huge volume and punch, it is very nicely made, very lightweight and very 'warm' sounding. The EQ is very subtle... it's really a 'one sound amp'... but that sound is very nice.

  19. I'd be using it for electric bass. My local dealer who deals with them said it might not be what I'm looking for as well.

    Thanks

Is something wrong with the Aguilar head? Just curious why it's not included...
