We made it! After wandering the TB wilderness for five parts, like a merry band of adequate low-end troubadours, we are setting down roots in a permanent home. This makes me happy enough to bust into a crazy tappy solo. Which I totally could do. If I chose. I do not so choose. The original post from 2008: Where we've been: The Mediocre Bassist Club. | TalkBass.com The Mediocre Bassist Club, pt. 2: Bigger! (Better, not so much.) | TalkBass.com The Mediocre Bassist Club, pt. 3: MBC3 | TalkBass.com The Mediocre Bassist Club, pt. 4 - We can count to four! | TalkBass.com Mediocre Bassists Club - 5 strings, a whole new octave of mediocre to explore | TalkBass.com And, now that we have the technology to break the dreaded 1000-post limit, we are setting down roots here. Aaahhhhhhhhhh... I think by now most of us know what's up. "Mediocre" does not mean "suck". It means no real interest in that advanced skill set non-bass players (and most bass players) seem to take for granted. And it means love for the bass, and love for playing, and love from drummers because you are solid. It means liking where you are. New folks are always welcome! If you would like a number, please expressly say so. Sometimes people want to just roll through, and that's cool too. Keep in mind it may take me a few weeks to actually issue a number, but I will, and you are IN the minute you say you are. When I started this club, six years and almost a thousand members ago, I expected it to fizzle. (After getting flamed by a mob of slap monsters.) But that Field of Dreams voice was not lying. I am not alone. Neither are you! --Bomb
UPDATE: All three of my bands have run their course, and I am bandless for the first time in years. It's sad, of course. But I am taking the opportunity to check in with myself and figure out what I want to be doing. Also, fortunately, I made a playdate with the drummer from my trio just before getting word that the teenybopper band is probably over. So I'm kinda still in it. All I really need is a drummer. Bands, man... --Bomb
Yep. I had a guitarist recently ask if I wanted to join a band as her bassist is playing in just about every band in town. She heard me at a blues jam. She said "you can really hold the bottom." Honest. That's what she said.
Well, it's nice to be home. As they say, "Home is where the Cab is", or something like that. Bomb -- good luck finding a new band... As I found out, there's lots of call for non-ego driven 'mediocre' bass players. Sound clips soon from the (un named) originals band, I promise, to prove my continued mediocrity! darrell
I am honored to reaffirm my commitment to this bottom-heavy group in our slapless, tapless, rootsy new home!
Success lies not with any particular skill level within the hierarchy but rather with an individual's availability. IOW: I don't care how good your chops are...if you're not available Saturday night, I can't use you. Me? I can pedal root-V all night and find my way to the venue which is pretty much how I passed the audition. Riis
As a thoroughly mediocre bass player, I don't have the ambition to ask for a number. I don't want one, since I would forget what it was anyway. We should all have the number 4, since that's what we count to most of the time. Any more than 4 is too confusing.
Wow...new digs are new! And I found my way back here after being away for too long and with no real good reason either. Nice to be back, and in a new home as well. Winning!
