The millionth thread about light od

Discussion in 'Effects [BG]' started by jazznrick, Mar 12, 2018.

  1. Hello folks,
I now realize my D*A*M Ezekiel is just to medium overdrivish to be light overdrive like a tube. I’d like something I can use a compressor with. I just hate the sound of just my bass into my ss amp. barbershop? Phat Phuk b? Something with a cool tube that can be seen? Thanks guys

Barbershop is great. Broughton Terraformer is better (transparent, but a lot more range).

How’s the terraform with active basses?

OP: You should tell us what you want before you start asking for recs. All I see is 'something cool' and that you don't like the unaffected tone of your bass. Maybe look for a bass you actually like the sound of, instead of building a second story on a house with a sub-par foundation. Ya feel me?

Being a dick is part of my nature, but I'm still curious what you're looking for. The quality of OD you want will help us suggest pedals...

That’s not even close to 500 words.

It's not a review, though. I set a review quota, not a per-post-quota. Speaking of which, don't you have 499 words to write? The first one is a freebie - it's "Apex".

The most transparent OD I've found is one of the Source Audio patches in the stock Aftershock. It's very dynamic, transparent and can be dialled from super light and very fuzzy, compressed and crunchy.

The source audio od engines sound a little processed to me 'for my taste'. They are very clear and articulate but i just get that fakeness feel about it. I do love the fuzz engines though. Anyway back to light od. I just love my old trusty vt bass.

Have fun wading through the wildly contrasting and contradicting opinions...

Some of the most disappointing pedals for me that have been hyped up on here have been: Aftershock, Barbershop, Grizzly. Each of them earned a resounding 'meh' and went back in the box!

I went through a number of overdrives looking for more warmth than anything else. I guess what I was looking for was pretty much unnoticeable until I dig in. Went through more pedals than I care to list, but started with a Big Muff and ended with an Empress Multidrive just for reference. I ended up with a DigiTech Hardwire CM-2 and couldn’t he happier. It seems pretty responsive to my playing style. The downside is that you’re only going to pay about $50 for one, but if you can live with that it’s worth checking out.

For me one of the best pedals for that is the Aguilar Tonehammer with the agro on. Other great options are the Way Huge Pork Loin and the Hudson Broadcast.
