What I don't get is why people buy these: and drive them without this: I always see guys on I4 (big local road full of fast/slow/incompetent drivers) ride race clone bikes (especially a lot on 1300 cc hayabusas) and drive them like jackasses (ever got passed by someone doing 140+ mph? I have...) and don't even wear a helmet. Not like it's going to do much at some of the speeds they ride, but still. These aren't Harley Davidsons, these are rocket ships with some steering.
because their idiots. thats why. I run the rental department at the harley dealer i work at and 9/10 renters don't want the helmets. Its an option. Me personally I'd take the helmet, because if anyone here has driven in Chicago know everyone in cages are morons. its also laws in some states. others not. its their own melon on the line if they want to paint something with their brains, more power to them. let natural selection ween most of the morons that ride out
I watched a guy wheelie from a light right in front of me for what seemed like thousands of feet. He was shifting gears with the front wheel off the ground. Cool looking but man, what if he went down?
I've heard a lot of the cops around here won't pursue guys on sports bikes because it ends up being more danger for the cop than it's worth...
Most of our fast riding was done in the Brooksville area. The cops there are really good at catching speeders with aircraft........REALLY GOOD They NEVER chase bikes with cars, at least I've never seen it. They radio ahead and set up roadblocks. I'm pretty sure they can measure speed from the aircraft using a laser, they don't need to follow you, it only takes a second. The thing is now, felony speeding lets you drive away, apear in court later, then maybe go to jail No towing and impouding.
I dont own my own bike but being a rental manager has its perks. but do I wear a Helmet when I ride? I do. In the state of Illinois is optional I haven't taken a bike home or on my day off since april due to the construction near my house, and it seems people get dumber when they see all the road horses and road cones. but hey the people that don't wear helmets and cant ride and wipe out give the human waste guys something to clean up so we should keep those hard working people employed.
No helmet = STUPID. I'm only here today because I was wearing one when a car hit me from behind in 1966. And the personal freedom argument doesn't wash. Your crash and injury raise everyone's insurance rates, and if you're a vegetable for 40 years, it costs us all a bundle. A friend of mine has a nice, moderate proposal: if you want to ride without a helmet, your auto and health insurance should be voided. Just prove financial responsibility (let's say $5 million in the bank) in lieu of insurance and then go out and ride without a helmet. IMO, same for seat belts.
Dude, I agree riding without a helmet is just speeding up natural selection. I just found your typo/misspelling ironic.
A Harley is one thing, I ride from time to time without a helmet, but wouldn't consider it on a sport bike. Especially speeds in excess of 50 mph, I've always got a helmet on.
christ, i feel stupid not wearing a helmet when Im out on my mountainbike. I would go ANYWHERE NEAR one of those crotch rockets without full leathers and a helmet. And even then you'd have to be paying me/aiming a gun at my head.
Maybe they've been watching too much Top Gun / American Ninja? I can recall a couple of sportsbike w/ no helmet -scenes..
Man, I didn't like driving I-4 in my Element, and it's pretty good protection...no way I'd do it on a crotch rocket. I drove around Orlando on a late 80's Honda Nighthawk S for several years, and NEVER got on I-4, even back then it was frightening. Thankfully, once you know your way around the area, it's actually quicker staying off that huge parking lot than using it, most of the time....
+1 I wear a skateboard/bmx style helmet, and I always get taunted by some fruitloop on a bmx with no helmet on. Hey, it's their funeral... Literally(?)
They don't look so cool in a hospital bed with permanent brain damage do they? Ive seen a few people wrap themselves around trees after biking tom foolery gone wrong. Luckily all helmet/body armour wearing people. All of them walked away with minor injuries...but i doubt it'd be much the same story for someone with no protection on.
I hate those guys. They are the single reason that insurance for the bike that I want (Triumph Daytona 675i) would cost me $10,000 a year. Seriously, I am a great rider, 5 years experience, never had an accident, ticket (on a bike, that is all that counts in Canada) ect. Those riders make me mad, none of them deserve to have a license, much less the skin on their backs. I really don't understand how it is comfortable to ride like that, I don't like riding faster than 40mph with my shield up. lowsound
