  1. What do you think?
Add one (or more, everyone's a winner) bass line that you think is epical!

me and a lot of friends agree (and you will probably think i am a big queer for liking them)

The Killers: Jenny was a friend of mine

it is the only bass line i have ever found humming to myself.

  4. The Barney Miller theme. I believe Carol Kaye played it.

    Or, Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn"

    Maybe Peggy Lee's "Fever"

Here's a hint, kids: When thinking about "The Most Well-Known Bass Line Of All Time" think about not only what you & your peers know, but also what your parents and maybe even grandparents know. I'm sure we here (in TB) could all hum the bass line to Pink Floyd's "Money" by rote, but we're an incredibly marginalized niche compared to all the people in the world who A) never even heard of Pink Floyd, and B) still sat down in front of the tube religiously to watch Barney Miller. Or Lawrence Welk.

You are incorrect. It wouldn't surprise me if she took credit for it, but it was Jim Hughart.

  11. The simple 5-1-1 thump of "My Girl" by theTemptations has to be a candidate.

to the chagrin of most: with or without you - u2.

even my mom knows that song.

  13. The classic, upright notes of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" must also be contenders.

    I'm A Man - Muddy Waters.

    The iconic blues bass line.

  16. Most of the stuff mentioned here is WAAAAYYY too new.

What about famous classical music bass lines?
    Beethoven's 5th - Movement #1:

One could easily dip into early 20th century blues for bass lines...but here are some that are memorable....
Time is Tight - Booker T.
    Peter Gunn theme - Mancini
Gimme Some Lovin' - Spencer Davis Group / Winwood

You have no idea how wrong you are. "Everyone" of a certain type in your generation might know the song, but that's about it.
