Lol... I guess if you ordered a bass and you didn't order it with the ramp it would be on you.

That 6 was really nice, but I am not a 6 string player as much as I would like to be.

  3. Was talking to Pete about his new custom pickups and preamp. He’s very excited about their performance. Looking forward to hearing hands on review of them as they roll out into the world.

I have the “earlier version” in my Koa Drakkar and I love the combo. I’m really interested in this double P he’s putting in the Greylings also. I’ve been harassing him about them.

  10. I happened to be vacationing with my wife in New York for about a week. I learned about Brooklyn Bass Bass scheduled for today, hosted by LaBella Strings / The Guitar Shop NYC.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Skjold today and I was able to test a Gen 5. I was very happy with this instrument.

Is it possible to get the catacomb option with a non-whaleback body style (for instance, just the regular offset body style)?

It is available in all the single cut styles I do, the Whaleback, Drakkar and the Zia. For the chambering to work you need the extra area of the upper bout. You don't get that with a double cut shape so the chambering system wouldn't really work. Hollowing something out is possible but that is not what the catacomb chambering is. Thanks for asking!

Hey guys, it has been a long time since I checked in on Skjold. I haven't owned one in over 10 years, but it still feels like the one that got away. Anyway, what is the connection between Skjold and Gruv Gear? I tried searching but haven't really found an explanation.

P.S. I still wear my old Skjold t-shirt after all these years! :D

I know Jay at Gruv Gear has had that custom Skjold Slayer for a long time. My guess would be that's where it started. But maybe Damian Erskine had a hand in the start of that relationship?

  17. Mr. Skjold is still actively producing quality instruments and he replies to Facebook messages rather quickly.

This past November, my wife and I had a vacation to New York and I dropped by Brooklyn Bass Bash, where Pete was in attendance with some of his instruments. I had the pleasure of taking a Gen 5 finished in trans white for a spin. (I practiced through headphones for the benefit of everyone in the room. LOL) It was everything I imagined a Skjold bass to perform like. While I do not own one yet, I have a planned build in my wishlist of a Gen 6 finished in Black with Pearl Essence Enhanced Grain.

My new Skjold Firedrake 4 String is complete and ready to head to NAMM where I will pick it up. If anyone is in the area, Pete will be displaying it at the Bass Bash Thursday and Friday night. I’ll be there too, so stop by and say hello!
