the term "double bass"

    Where did the term "double bass" come from. What is it the double of?

    I think the "double" refers to the instrument's function of doubling the cello/continuo line in early music.

    David, since a search for "Double Bass definition" makes the forum search engine go "tilt", how would you suggest I search for that particular thread you refer to?
