So I made a trip to Songbirds in Chattanooga yesterday. If you're not familiar with the place, it is the home to the largest guitar collection in the world. Sadly they are closing their doors for good on Aug. 15th.

For this thread I stuck with mainly posting pics of basses, except for the signage and a panoramic of the vault, 19 pics total. But if you want to see every display case in the place, plus the vault, I have all of those plus some individual instrument / information pics (130 total) posted publicly on Facebook. You don't have to have a FB account to view them. You should even be able to download the album if you wish. It can be found here - https://www.facebook.com/clark.word/media_set?set=a.10158609753404350&type=3

    Now for the bass content...

Sadly, it looks like Facebook has removed the "public" feature. When in a browser and NOT logged in to facebook, it will not allow the album to be viewed. I just tested it, that bites. So now I have to find someplace else to post the entire album so people can view it.

Great question, one that I asked while I was there yesterday.

Some of the instruments will be going back to their owners. And some of the instruments will be going to Songbird's foundation which teaches kids music. For those that go to the foundation they may be kept for display, sold or auctioned off to raise money, or used to teach kids how to play.

So sad. Thanks for posting all of these photos for the rest of us who will never have the opportunity to visit Songbirds.

Does anyone have an idea what 2-color sunburst finish is on that '63 Jazz in one of the "group" photos? If that's original, I've never seen another one like it.

Good eye! I wish I knew. The only information they had posted on it of course is that it's a '63. I suspect it's original though. If you look below the bass, there seems to be like an old ad on display showing that exact paint scheme.

It’s definitely reminiscent of the Sienna Burst finishes from the 90’s.

I hope some Fender experts chime in to solve the mystery. I’m bamboozled.

I would go back there this Saturday and try to get an answer, but it being their last day I suspect the place will be a packed out madhouse. It was pretty nuts yesterday, the gift shop has already been wiped out. I had to settle for a 3x on a t shirt, I might be able to shrink it enough, I wear a 2x. The only other choices they had were small or medium. I did pick up a limited numbered show poster, a bass book, some stickers, and picks too. And I almost didn't get a guided tour because I didn't book it before I got there.

Let me go through my book and see if there's anything in there.

Thanks, @Clark W - let me know what you find.

HA! I really should pick up a copy of The Bass Book, especially considering it was co-written by Barry Moorhouse.

This was my office from '86-'93:

Well I was a little disappointed. Starting at the beginning and working from there, the book covers the entire 50s, but then it skips the first half of the 60's and jumps right into the middle of the 60s with the sale of Fender to CBS. I stopped there for now.

I'm seriously considering going back to Songbirds this Saturday and taking individual pics of every bass there, if it will even be possible. I had to wait a bunch for people to move along for some of the pics I got yesterday.

Here is the entire photo album of every display, the vault room, and some individual / info pics, about 130 total, posted in an album here on Talkbass.
