I just got intruced to this guy. Pretty cool stuff. So I have been reading up on him on the internet and I was surprised when I read why he left columbia records...

    "
He broke with Columbia in 1969 shortly after CBS suggested that he record an album of Beatles songs.
    "

I was like damn! How insulting to him. I mean I love the Beatles, but that's such a different genre...

Anyways, it's interesting reading. Check it out if you like. :)

  2. Jazz was commercially dead in the late '60s...lots of serious musicians were being pushed to record albums of top-40 tunes, because the early-20s male demographic had moved on to psychedelic rock. It's sad to know that even an icon like Monk was pushed out because of commercial pressures.

  3. Do a search on TB for TM.
Some good must haves can up a while back.

Monks first disk for Riverside was Monk plays Ellington. Its all covers but it is more Monk than Ellington. Little closer to home than the Beatles.

If you like Monk, check out Herbie Nichols...yet another sad story of Jazz.

I think I may go spin "Thelonius" from Blow By Blow...
