anybody know of any good theory books. I have the Bass Grimoire, which is awesome for scales and has some theory but I'm talking about a theory bible that i can just dive into for about a year and surface everyonce in awhile for a bowl of frosted flakes.

There are many theory books. Most theory teachers will tell you that it is hard to teach theory from a book but here are two suggestions:

    1: stefan Kostka
    2: Walter Piston

just google their names along with "music theory " and the titles will come up.

I used the Kostka book most of the way through college except for 20th C. music and counterpoint.
