Posted here a lot over the past several months. Got a lot of help and suggestions, and a few sarcastic/antagonistic comments (wouldn’t be TB without that now would it? )
At any rate, I was having a real difficult time getting a sound/tone I liked. Was thinking of getting rid of the new Fender jazz bass.
Didn’t like the brand new GK 212 Neo and was not in love with the GK MB 500 amp either. Bought an Ibanez sound gear SRT800 with active EQ and loved the sound and also decided to buy a Mesa Subway 410. Now…………I think I’m finally starting to zero in on something. That Mesa 410 is so sweet! In love with it at first note played through it.
Started building a pedal board but just kept playing the Ibanez and not the Fender. Got a tuner, nice compressor pedal, High pass filter and thought everything was decent. Not in love….. but decent.
Then I thought, why don’t I try a pre amp? I watched tons of videos, read the forums, etc. Was thinking this would be a little cheaper option to go instead of the Mesa D800+ I was wanting. Decided on the Aguilar Tone hammer.
Plugged it up and first though was…….what did I just waste my money on?! Posted around with it for a while and just could not get a sound I liked. Heard all these good things about it and was really stumped. So what would the best thing to do be? Of course, come back to TB and search.
Ended up coming across TB member @Eublet. Used a few of his recommendations and found one……..OH YEAH! That’s it!!!! Funny thing…..I found it with the FENDER JAZZ. I couldn’t for the life of me get a good tone with the Ibanez. It’s like I was meant to play the Fender through this pre amp. I have no idea what you do with an active EQ when using a preamp. Just sounded muddy and real “crowded”. Almost like too much going on. So, I haven’t played the Ibanez for like 3 weeks. Sent Eublet a PM 3 weeks ago but never heard back. I think I read he rarely posts here anymore.
So, that’s a whole other topic I need to get some info on. What setting on the preamp and what settings on the active eq on the bass? I just can’t get them to play nice together. But the Fender……deep lows, clear highs, and the ever so slightest growl/hair on the notes! Man, I smile when I’m playing because it sounds so good. Albeit in the practice room by myself. But I’ll be trying it out with a band in a couple of weeks, so we’ll see what it sounds like there.
Anyways, keeping the Fender now! Been a crazy journey over the last few months. Really enjoy playing it. Hope I can figure out what to do with the Ibanez. I forgot to mention, I’m running through the FX loop, therefore bypassing the GK MB500 EQ section.
Anyways just thought I’d share my journey and update anyone who was interested.
