I've always wore the normal, everyday goatee, but recently I've been thinking of shaving off the sides for a "Jazz/Beatnik Goatee". (is there a formal name for it?) I normally shave the line that goes up to my bottom lip, but I'm going to let it grow in and then shave the sides. I was wondering, does anybody have any tips for shaving and trimming this type of beard? Does anyone here have one?
Something like this? Nevermind the expression, I was fooling around with my camera and a baret that I found. Anyways, it's bit wide and short for a true jazz-tee. The hardest part is getting it symmetrical. Having something like strip of paper or a comb as wide as you want your goatee to be and marking the middle line on it helps to check if your beard has grown too wide. It's rather easy to shave it with a machine, just use the trimmer part to cut the excessive hair off and then shave the stubble by moving the blades up and down right next to the beard for a clean cut. It also looks neater if you go through it with a trimmer once in a while - mine has a comb that's adjustable up to 1/2 inches. Also if you want it to look thick but not hang too much below your chin, you can first trim the whole beard with longer comb setting, and then under the chin with shorter. Good luck!
Thanks for the pointers, Tsal. I've been trying to find a good pic of Roscoe Beck, cause I remember he had a killer Jazz goat But all the ones I find he doesn't have one, or it's at an angle that you can't see it that well. I remember the pic that use to be in Musician's Friend to promote his signature Fender was an excellent example.
PLEASE DON'T KICK MY ASS!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO. Whoa.... you like a member for an underground army or something.
For some reason, everytime that I find a decent pic of myself or my beard or my hat or whatever, I look like a mugger otherwise So that you wouldn't lose your sleep over the beret pic, here's something nice and soothing and where I actually look like a bit more relaxed fellow that I really am, ask Wulf if you don't believe me That's a pretty weird pic of me though, from couple months back when I cut all my beard off
