Ok, so I've wanted a Carl Thompson bass for years, though to be honest, that desire is based a lot on looks.

I'm a StingRay player at the core--I absolutely love the sound and feel of a 'Ray.

That said, I would like to one day (within the next 10 years, ideally) have a Grail Bass, and that for me would be a Carl Thompson, with a purpleheart body, neck, and fretboard; StingRay pickup location (preferably the Bartolini 'Ray replacement pick up); whammy bar; and Aguilar preamp.

I know I'm probably stupid for wanting this bass--I just can't get the image out of my head and what that bass might sound like.

So my question is this--while this is my Grail Bass, are there other luthiers that could make the same bass, or better, and who should I look at?

So far as I know, CT has very little to do with the hands on part of his business any longer.

The answer is yes, there are a number of very talented builders out there.

Pete Hilton builds in a style inspired by CT

I kinda figured CT was more hands off as he's gotten older.

That's definitely something I'll be considering when it comes time to pull the trigger.

Is Pete Hilton a member of TB? I'll google him in a minute, just curious if he was a member here.

No idea. There are other high end builders out there as well. Hilton was just the first to pop into my head.

Pete Hilton. Don’t think he’s on TB. Pete worked at Carl’s shop for years. You’re basically getting a CT with Pete.

I found Pete's Instagram and Facebook, but his website is "under construction."

    His basses are impressive!

Also came across a guy in Europe, I think, Jens Ritter. Those basses are interesting to say the least.

    Yeah?

I'm blown away by Ritter's work. Those basses are absolutely BONKERS.

Might have changed my mind...just wonder what they sound like.

Just went through the form for full on custom build bass.

    The options are insane!

Now to find a YouTube video or two of the Ritter being demoed.

If ever I was to buy a Ritter it would be an R8, but I am floored by this Jupiter.

Saw the Jupiter and about died.

    Such an awesome design.

Though I'm partial to the Okon with whammy bar and LED inlays.

When I was GASing hard on CT-style I found Jim Carrigan though this site. Reviews I've read seem to be pretty positive as well. Obviously not CT, but will build you whatever you want between 1-1.5k.

One thing to note is that CT doesn’t make 34” scale basses... not sure how much that would matter to you...

I think some of CB (Cliff Bordwell) basses draw some inspiration from CT. I’m not sure what his reputation is these days, but I think he used to be well regarded, and may be a member here...

    I’m sure there are others...

  19. I don't know - with a tattoo like yours, your options are limited. ;)
