So i've been trying to enhance my tone. I've done a lot of EQ'ing, and i'm kind of convinced that I shold get new pickups. Feel free to pursuade me out of getting pickups if you want. Anyways, right now I just have Mighty-Mite 6 string soapbars that came with my Brawley. I'm looking for something really edgy and growly. Listen to "In The Name of God" by Dream Theater during the verse to see what sound i'm aiming for. I want them to be pleny bassy. I like the sound of my bridge pickup alone but it kinda sounds too much like a fart unless I add a ton of bass over it. What pickups would you guys reccomend? No price range really. Also, if you have any advice EQing lemme know.

    My EQ's now.
    Ampeg:
    Low - 3 o'clock
    Mid - 1 o'clock
    High - 3 o'clock

    Bass:
Low - Cranked most of the time
    Mid - Pretty much cranked
High - A little above middle

EDIT: I think I might be aspiring for a large MM type humbucker sound. Any way to achieve that tone from a soapbar? Also, if I got new ones, could I install coil taps on my bass or would that be way too much work?

while i stopped playing DT music and being a Myung wanna be ... you really cant imitate his tone. his bass and his final tone are not the same. he has tons of effects on there!

i think he was seen once during the development of his RBXJM2 with a Basslines pup in his bass. so you might try looking in those those.
i am about to complete a purchase of two quad coils from Delano today or tomorrow. too bad the bass i am building isnt ready yet. i could have wrote a review to help you look into Delano's.

oh there was a link on here some time ago with a complete rig list of Myung. it was scanned from a magazine. i was quite surprised to see that Myung switched from his Mesa customized Tri to the Ashdown EVO heads.

he has phaser, chorus, overdrive, flanger sometimes, compressor and one or two more effects on all the time. he also changes his tone every album.

about the Basslines pickup, you can email Seymour Duncan asking them about any development programs of a new pickup between them and Myung. see what kind of reply they will give you. if they did, ask what is the closest in production model to that pickup they were developing or if he had used a stock pup.

one other thing i always do, i email almost all manufacturers. they know way more than some TBers. they will give you accurate information (unless you talk to some cheap manufacturer) about their products.

most manufacturers do have a decent reply time except if you're dealing with Delano who takes a week+ to reply to my emails (even when i asked him how could i pay! i was expecting the fastest reply then).

Thanks for the info man. I'm signed up for that forum-- I should've searched there. :smug: I'm gonna email Seymour Duncan when I get a chance.
